I see it all the time in fitness marketing.
12 weeks to a better booty. Lose 10 pounds in 8 weeks. Drop a clothing size. Get your summer beach body.
I understand why those promises catch people’s attention. People want something to work, and they want to know when they’ll see progress. The reality is though, meaningful results usually take a lot longer than people want and results that stick with you take longer still.
It Takes More Time Than the Ads Admit
Getting stronger, building muscle, improving your fitness, and changing habits takes time and commitment. Becoming the kind of person who keeps showing up, even when life is busy, stressful, or inconvenient matters more than the ads would have you believe.
We’ve Made “Results” Way Too Narrow
A lot of people hear that word and immediately think of the scale, measuring tape, or before-and-after photos. Those things can be part of the picture, but they are not the whole picture.
I speak from experience. My weight hasn’t changed significantly in 8 years of working out. It changes the most when I’m tracking calories but I generally fluctuate within the same 10 pounds. The measuring tape hasn’t moved much. Sure I’ve gained muscle, but I’ll never be lean or jacked or fit into a size 8.
More frequent and consistent gym attendance though, has translated to being stronger, having better movement in my knees (allowing me to walk, bike, and hike longer distances), sleeping better and experiencing better mental and physical health. Building physical health that lasts and adopting good nutrition habits are outcomes that can take years to develop. Not just 12 weeks.
The Real Reason People Come to the Gym Often Has Nothing to Do With Weight Loss
A lot of people need:
- Accountability and structure
- To be around other people
- To get out of their own head for an hour
- A place where someone notices whether they came or not
For one person, the result is community. For another, it is confidence. For someone else it’s feeling more mentally and emotionally grounded. For many it is simply feeling better equipped to handle life.
Those results may not show up in a photo or on the scale and the casual observer may not notice them at all. As the person living it though, you will feel a difference and the important people in your life will get to experience a better you. These are the changes that don’t happen overnight but are worth the effort.
All of It Counts
Yes, it’s good to have goals around weight loss, body composition, or how your clothes fit. There is nothing wrong with wanting those things, and they can be very motivating for some people. But if those are the only things you count as progress, you may miss some of the biggest changes exercise is giving you.
Not every result can be seen. Some of the most important ones are the ones you feel.
Ready to start seeing results — all of them?
If you’re looking for a place that meets you where you are and helps you build something that actually lasts, I’d love to connect. Whatever your reason is for showing up!
